About Boughton Engineering

Founded in 1897, Boughton Engineering is Britain’s longest-established designer and manufacturer of hook loaders, skip loaders, and close-coupled trailers. Over the decades, we have been at the forefront of innovation, design, and engineering excellence. Many of our products remain industry benchmarks today, reflecting a legacy of quality and reliability.

Our history

Our history dates back to the early development of agricultural equipment, farm implements, , forestry, and transport. Over time, we evolved into a successful manufacturer of a wide range of products, including waste handling equipment, wet waste tankers, fuel oil tankers, dry waste ejection trailers, military logistics equipment, and aviation firefighting and rescue vehicles. Throughout this evolution, Boughton has led many initiatives and developed innovations that have stood the test of time, often setting industry standards and best practices.

Our facilities and UK manufacturing

Our main facilities in Wolverhampton bring over 250 years of combined engineering expertise to every project. Our headquarters occupy a 2.5-acre site supporting our main engineering, manufacturing, and production operations. To support our growth and ensure all manufacturing remains within the UK, we invested in a modern fabrication facility in North Devon, which plays a key role in upholding standards, maintaining flexibility, and delivering high-quality ‘just in time’ products.

Our heritage and achievements

Boughton Engineering’s rich history remains central to our identity. We recently collaborated with the Amersham Museum, the Boughton family, and others to produce a detailed summary of our remarkable history and achievements. To read or download a PDF of this timeline, scroll down below.

Today, Boughton Engineering is part of the privately owned Skan Group Holdings Limited, a family-run business committed to long-term success and sustainable growth. Since acquiring the company in 2011, Skan Group has invested heavily in new facilities, plant, equipment, service, and parts operations, as well as expanding product ranges and industry-specific management teams.

Our vision is to be the leading provider and centre of excellence for engineered solutions in waste collection and handling. Our achievements have been recognised with numerous awards, including the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce Award for Excellence in Manufacturing.
